Key resource

In 2024-2026, the Right to Education Initiative (RTE) has worked with Education Out Loud (EOL) grantees to strengthen the rights-based approach to their advocacy and social accountability activities. In its role as an EOL Global Learning Partner, RTE provided capacity development and engaged in tailored one-on-one support to EOL grantees across different regions and contexts. The aim was to strengthen the integration of a human rights-based approach into their advocacy activities.

On 1 July 2026, the civil society organisations that received support from RTE came together for a peer learning session to reflect on their experiences, share achievements and challenges, and discuss lessons learned from applying a human rights-based approach in practice.

This publication captures the key lessons, insights, and recommendations that emerged from the peer learning session. It aims to share these reflections with the wider Education Out Loud community and to contribute to ongoing learning on how civil society organisations can use human rights approaches to advance the realisation of the right to education.

This publication demonstrates how civil society organisations can draw on human rights law and mechanisms to reinforce their advocacy strategies and pursue accountability.

Through five case studies, the publication explores the context and underlying issue related to the right to education, the legal framework relevant to each case, the advocacy strategies employed by civil society organisations, the outcomes and impacts of their efforts, and the lessons drawn from each experience. Each case study highlights one legal or quasi-legal accountability mechanism, at national or international level, illustrating how civil society organisations have applied it to drive change. In addition, each case study provides a list of key resources to help CSOs navigate the human rights system and select the advocacy strategy best suited to securing accountability.
