Demanding accountability: Joint statement in response to reports of a child sexual abuse cover up at the World Bank

A statement signed by 33 organisations who are gravely concerned about the recent media report of child sexual abuse at Bridge International Academies in Kenya, and allegations that the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC) for years turned a blind eye to the abuse.
RTE and more than 200 organisations and trade unions call for the adoption of the Africa Group resolution on a UN Tax Convention

On 11 October 2023, the Africa Group at the United Nations tabled a proposal calling for a comprehensive UN tax convention. Now, over 200 organisations and trade unions, among them RTE, have sent a letter to governments calling for the adoption of the Africa Group’s resolution, and stressing that this issue should be treated as a matter of highest priority and urgency.

45 organisations de la société civile reçoivent avec inquiétude le rapport d'enquête de conformité du Bureau du conseiller-médiateur (Compliance Advisor Ombudsman, CAO) sur l'investissement de la Société financière internationale (SFI) de la Banque mondiale dans les Bridge International Academies (BIA, également connues sous le nom d'écoles NewGlobe), et reconnaissent ses graves conclusions concernant les allégations d'abus sexuels sur des enfants dans la chaîne d'écoles à but lucratif de l'entreprise au Kenya.

Exploitation in the Name of Education: Uneven Progress in Ending Forced Child Begging in Senegal

The  report examines Senegal’s mixed record in addressing the problem in the year since a fire ripped through a Quranic boarding school in Dakar housed in a makeshift shack, killing eight boys. After the fire, President Macky Sall pledged to take immediate action to close schools where boys live in unsafe conditions or are exploited by teachers, who force them to beg and inflict severe punishment when the boys fail to return a set quota of money. While important legislation has advanced, authorities have taken little concrete action to end this abuse. The report informs about the regulation of Quranic school and makes recommendations.

 
Rapport de l'étude sur la privatisation et la marchandisation de l'éducation et la formation au Sénégal

Ce rapport résulte d’une étude exhaustive sur la privatisation et la marchandisation de l’éducation au Sénégal.

Les résultats, analyses et conclusions de cette étude mettent en évidence :
  • D’une part, l’ancrage de plus en plus profond de la privatisation de l’éducation dans le pays et la dérive qui en résulte, à savoir la marchandisation de celle-ci.
  • D’autre part, les enjeux et défis de la lutte pour une Ecole et une Université publiques de qualité, performantes et attractives.
Ce rapport devra servir d’outil de plaidoyer et de lutte pour une éducation publique de qualité pour tous. Cet
objectif noble, ambitieux et légitime est un impératif pour le respect des principes d’équité, de justice et d’inclusion sociales mais aussi, pour répondre aux exigences de développement économique, social et culturel de notre pays.
Haki Zetu: ESC Rights in Practice - Right to Education

This practical toolkit on the right to education was published by Amnesty International in collaboration with the Right to Education Initiative.  It is part of the Haki Zetu handbook series on economic, social and cultural rights, developed by the Special Programme on Africa of Amnesty International Netherlands.

It contains sections on understanding the right to education and on taking action, with a particular focus on Africa – providing concrete examples at national and regional levels and reference to relevant laws and policies.  It is to be used in conjunction with the Main Book of the series, which provides general information on ESC rights. 

Both the Main Book and the practical toolkit on the Right to Education have been developed for local civil society organisations working with local communities to realise the right to education.  The tool seeks to assist community workers to better study laws and policies and promote the monitoring of the right to education.
