22 January 2015

On 20 January, 2015, Somalia became the 196th State party to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

In a press release, UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake welcomed the ratification, stating:

“By ratifying the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the government of Somalia is making an investment in the well-being of its children, and thus in the future of its society.”

The CRC is the most ratified human rights treaty in history, of all UN Member States only South Sudan and the United States have not ratified the Convention, although both are signatories.
