The Right to Education Project Launches Arabic Website

The launch of the Arabic version of the Right to Education Project's website comes at a time when the Arab world is struggling to guarantee the right to education. Political instability and armed conflicts in the region have resulted in increasingly grave violations of the right to education, including:  the destruction of teaching institutes; the killing of children and teachers; the use of schools as military shelters; the arresting of teachers; the closure, bombing and destruction of schools; as well as the displacement of millions of students and their families to camps that do not provide them with education or meet their minimum human needs.

This website provides a space and a chance for people working in the education field and for right to education advocates to come together, communicate, and increase their potential and capacity to address the continued violation of the right to education in the region.    

Additionally, professional and credible Arabic websites on the right to education are almost non-existent, so the launch of this website indicates a positive step for those who work on the protection of the right to education.

Despite the widespread violations of the right to education in the Arab world, the launch of this website coincides with the awarding of the Global Teacher Prize to Hanan al-Hroub, a Palestinian refugee teacher who focuses on eliminating violence in the classroom through play. Hanan al-Hroub illustrates the importance of teachers especially in conflict affected areas. She is now an ambassador of education.

Refaat Sabbah is the General Director (and founder) of the Teacher Creativity Center, Chair of the Arab Network for Human Rights and Citizenship Education (ANHRE), and President of the Arab Campaign for Education (ACEA).

Refaat has a Master’s in Gender and Development Studies and Law (2004), a Bachelor’s in Arabic Language and a Diploma in Journalism (1997) from Birzeit University, Palestine, and a Diploma in Adult Training Development (1999) from Toronto University, Canada.
