In her first report to the Human Rights Council, 25 years after the establishment of the mandate on the right to education, the Special Rapporteur reviews achievements, particularly on how the right to education is understood today and the obligations it entails, as well as contemporary and emerging issues that need to be considered to ensure the right to education for all, today and in the future.

Education is under attack around the world. From Afghanistan to Colombia, Mali to Thailand, students and teachers are killed, raped, and abducted, while schools and universities are bombed, burned down, and used for military purposes.
Documenting Education Under Attack: Five key lessons for collaborations between civil society organisations and journalists
Documenting the impact of conflict on education is a complex, time consuming and often dangerous process, whose consequences may be difficult to witness. Inthis context, the relationship between journalists and civil society organisations (CSOs) can be incredibly fruitful. They often share a common aim: to make the world aware of attacks on education and their immense costs to individuals, to communities, and across entire generations. Journalist-CSO partnerships can shed light on injustices, tell powerful human stories, and lead to redress and lasting change for those who have suffered.

Around the world, higher education communities are overwhelmed by frequent attacks on scholars, students, staff, and their institutions. State and non-state actors, including armed militant and extremist groups, police and military forces, government authorities, off-campus groups, and even members of higher education communities, among others, carry out these attacks, which often result in deaths, injuries, and deprivations of liberty.

A human rights approach: The right to education in the time of COVID-19
One of the most serious consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic has been the disruption of children’s education worldwide with the closure of schools for public health reasons. Projections from UNESCO Institute for Statistics show that nearly 100 million children across eight age cohorts would move below the minimum proficiency threshold in reading in 2020 due to the pandemic (UNESCO Institute for Statistics, 2021).
Nations Unies Conseil de Sécurité Résolution 2601 (2021) - la protection de l’éducation en période de conflit armé
Le 29 octobre 2021, le Conseil de sécurité de l'ONU, composé de 15 membres, a adopté une résolution unanime, saluée comme la première du genre, qui condamne les attaques contre les écoles, les enfants et les enseignants et exhorte les parties en conflit à protéger immédiatement le droit à l'éducation. Il est important de noter que la résolution rend explicites les liens entre l'éducation, la paix et la sécurité.

El 29 de octubre de 2021, los 15 miembros del Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU adoptaron una resolución unánime, aclamada como la primera de este tipo, que condena los ataques contra escuelas, niños y maestros e insta a las partes en conflicto a salvaguardar de inmediato el derecho a la educación. Es importante destacar que la resolución hace explícitos los vínculos entre educación, paz y seguridad.
