The Right to Education Project would like to invite you to attend the official launch of the online Guide to Monitoring the Right to Education Using Indicators followed by an open panel discussion on the importance of monitoring the right to education in the context of the 2030 education agenda.
The event will take place from 14:30 – 16:30 on 11 April 2016 in Committee Room 1 at the UCL Institute of Education, 20 Bedford Way, London, WC1H 0AL (directions)
The event will begin with a presentation of the Right to Education Project’s online Guide to Monitoring the Right to Education and Right to Education Indicators Selection Tool. The Guide and Tool have been produced to demystify and simplify the monitoring process and help those engaging in education advocacy to gather credible and relevant evidence of violations of the right to education (using human rights indicators) which can then be used as a basis upon which to advocate for change, in line with human rights law and principles. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about the Guide and Tool and share any feedback. We therefore encourage you to explore and test the Guide and Tool beforehand.
The presentation will be followed by an open panel discussion on the importance of monitoring education from a human rights perspective in light of the new commitments made by the international community to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4 on education and the goals set forth in the Education 2030 Incheon Declaration and Framework for Action. Whilst the 2030 Education Development Agenda offers greater impetus for States to implement certain aspects of the right to education, there is also a danger that education, conceived as a means to facilitate sustainable development, neglects important dimensions of the right to education, particularly extant legal obligations under international human rights law.
