Role overview

The Right to Education Initiative (RTE) is looking for a Communications Manager 

The successful candidate will be responsible to develop and implement an exciting and audience-focused communications strategy in line with RTE’s strategic plan. The communications manager will be responsible for the management and development of RTE’s website, ensuring the content is always relevant and up to date, sharing information to targeted audiences and raising RTE’s profile. He or she will play a key role in supporting RTE’s priority activities and programmes.

This position includes possible travels  to attend work-related meetings and events worldwide.

Areas of responsibilities and key tasks

Communications strategy

  • Develop an exciting and audience-focused communications strategy, together with RTE staff and executive board, to help deliver our organisational strategy and objectives.

  • Oversee the implementation of the communications strategy.

  • Oversee the development and delivery of strategies for digital channels, as well as communications strategies for specific campaigns.

Website and social media presence management

  • Produce, consult on, and implement an annual plan for RTE’s website in line with the communications strategy, including the implementation of our planned core activities.

  • Web and content management

  • Ensure RTE’s website is easy-to-use, meets the needs of our audience in terms of content, functionality, and user experience.

  • Day-to-day management of RTE’s international web presence (websites is English, French, Spanish, and Arabic) according to the organisational objectives and priorities.

  • Lead on liaising with a web agency to redesign RTE’s websites.

  • Analyse, using analytics, and draw actionable insights across all digital channels.

  • Source external content contributions, particularly blog posts.

  • Coordination of alternative language websites, to ensure content is regularly updated, relevant items are translated, and contributions sourced.

  • Recruit and supervise the work of community language facilitators.

  • Track developments related to the right to education, human rights, and development, as well as RTE’s media presence.

  • Identify and pursue opportunities to maximise the impact of advocacy and increase use of online resources and tools.

Maintain social media and media presence

  • Develop and advise on the strategic use of social media, tailoring content to different audiences and channels. 

  • Maintain an active profile of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. 

  • Cultivate and manage media contacts and relations.

  • Produce press releases on news-worthy pieces of work.

  • Track global media for key development on the right to education and support rapid responses to relevant news articles.

Production of communication material

  • Produce high-quality, engaging, and original content, including videos, infographics, press releases, news items, and reports, using desktop publishing, video editing, and photo editing software.

  •  Oversee editing, translation, design, and dissemination of regular publications, including monthly e-Bulletin, calendar, and annual report.

  • Produce high-quality and on-brand templates for RTE content, including for: case summaries, case studies, monthly e-Bulletin, reports, factsheets, etc.

  • Adhere and implement RTE’s style guide for online and print content.

Others

  • Management of RTE’s internal communications systems, for example, CRM. 

  • Propose tools to improve RTE’s internal communication

  • Support RTE staff members in media and communications for research and advocacy efforts.

  • Facilitate strategic discussions to clarify objectives, audience(s), key messages, and potential risks related to communications efforts.

  • Provide final edit and layout for grant proposals and report narratives.

  • Publicise and support facilitation of periodic events.

  • Keep abreast of social, communications, and fundraising trends and network with appropriate external organisations to inform thinking.

  • Keep tracks of RTE’s impacts, including on media and social media

  • Act as a point of contact to external consultants, and coordinate the delivery of their work.

  • Oversee the work of interns where applicable.

  • From time to time, carry out any other duties that are within the scope of the job.

Note: This role could expand to a full-time role if resources permit – in which case additional responsibilities may be added such as digital marketing, development of multimedia materials etc. 

Candidate profile

We are looking for a highly skilled and enthusiastic Communications Manager to join our team and lead RTE’s communication activities.

This is a new position and a key role, and the successful candidate will have proven experience in communication. It will be essential for the candidate to be committed to human rights, particularly the right to education.

Aside from sharing our values, we are looking for someone who is comfortable working in a multicultural environment and who is happy to take on new tasks and support the team when needed.

In addition to an expert, we are looking for someone who has excellent interpersonal skills.

The ideal candidate will have:

Education & qualifications

  • Graduate and/or postgraduate degree in relevant fields, including journalism, political sciences, communications, human rights, or development and/or relevant experience in these fields.

  • Substantial experience in communications or related fields.

Essential knowledge

Required

  • Good understanding of the international human rights context.

  • Familiarity with civil society activism and advocacy, including rights-based approaches.

  • Good understanding of the global communication landscape and technics

  •  Interest in and understanding of new developments in visual imaging and multimedia.

Desired

  • Familiarity with international human rights law, education and development issues, or related

Know-how 

Required

  • Experience using Content Management Systems, web editing software packages, and other emerging technologies.

  • Experience of using social media platforms and the role/utility of social media for a small human rights organisation.

  • Experience of creating and promoting social media content tailored for different channels, as well as monitoring and responding to comments.

  • Experience of writing and building emails tailored to relevant audiences.

  • Strong written communications skills, in particular an ability to translate dense and technical information into easy to understand and accessible content.

  • Strong editing and proofreading skills. A keen eye for detail.

  • Fluency in English and one or more of either French, Spanish, or Arabic. 

  • Working to tight deadlines.

Desired

  • Experience handling media and communications for  human rights or social justice organisations.

  • Confident editing html.

  • Experience of working with multiple language media and media in different contexts.

  • Web development expertise.

  • Experience in digital marketing.

  • Experience in making videos

Status & location 

  • Part-time position (3 days a week, 21 hours).

  • One-year contract, with possible extension depending on funding

  • Our office is based in London, with flexibility to work from home. Possibility to work from another country can be considered.

Salary range                                                                                                

£35,000 - £39,000 per year for London-based reference (prorated  £21,000 to £23,400)
